Election Day....POST #5

6:00 Ryan agrees to a "hardcore 30 minutes of study" so we can get to our friend Renjit's to watch election coverage. I fold mountains of clean laundry.

6:30 Television turned off, running to the Nissan to get beverages for the election night party at Safeway.

6:48 Arrive at Renjit's house to hear "It's over." Meaning that the consensus is that Obama has taken the election by storm.

7:29 Ryan shares some of his beer with Obama.

8:02 Heard on MSNBC and CNN that with the close of west coast polls, Obama can be named as the president elect.

8:05 BBC website announces Obama's victory.
8:06 Screen shot of Google's interactive political map site showing Obama has clinched the west coast and enough electoral votes to claim the presidency.

8:07 Champagne bottles are opened and the bubbly starts to flow. Miraculously I get Ryan to make an "excited election face" for the camera.

8:17 McCain begins his concession speach. Our election party crowd, myself included, was really moved by McCain's gracious words. We were all impressed.

8:28 Screen shot of the Obama Biden campaign website updated to reflect the big news. A hearty "Thank You" is displayed on their main page.
8:31 Screen shot of the NY Times website and Obama as president elect.

8:34 Dessert time at the election party. Dessert of choice? BAKED ALASKA.
8:57 Obama and family take the stage. I start to feel my heart swelling.
9:11 Obama talks about those whose vote he did not win, and how he hears their concerns.
9:12(ish) Obama addresses the world at large. I have to wipe my tears at this point. "Our stories are singular but our destiny is shared."

9:14 Obama honors Anne Nixon Cooper. Ryan's tears start to build too!

9:46 We realize it is time to head home.

10:59 Prepping for bed. Tomorrow is "just another day" and yet it marks the dawn of a new era in our minds. We may need to keep plodding along as usual....studying, looking for work, building new friendships. But, we are also encouraged that we have been a part of a moment in time that is truly historic. We have helped create change, just as we do every 4 years, but this time it seems a little more real.

Absolutely loved your Election Day series! :) But it made me miss you guys - you would have liked our big Electoral College Wall Map that we colored in as states were called. DC is still buzzing post-election but now the talk seems to be around the Obama family, where the girls will go to school, and Barack and Michelle's potential to set the social scene ablaze. Sheesh.
