We have been busy building our garden, and soon, we hope to report that it is growing rapidly and full of good organic food! I found the photos which I'd originally thought were lost. Here is our garden plot when we first got it. There was some serious growth we needed to chop down and remove.
After a couple of hours our 12 x 18 plot looked like this:
Here are some photos of our hard work the last few weeks after clearing the weeds. Let me emphasize one word...HARD. This was all very hard and I have such great respect for those westward trail blazing pioneers.
Here I am raking in the new compost into the existing dirt, which has a very high clay content and thus does not drain well. Mixing in fresh compost is essential to ensuring our plants grow and don't just live in a giant puddle.
Here is Ryan building our second box.
In Box 1 we planted broccoli, an heirloom tomato, thyme, as well as green onions and carrots.
The carrots and green onions have yet to sprout, but it will take at least another week until we see anything. In Box 2 I'm hoping to plant potatoes and some peas!
I planted the peas in a small pot on our back deck and we'll transplant the seedlings once they are a little bigger. Since we'll be gone for the summer we're hoping a friend will want to tend to our plot and possibly grow some new produce.
We have been out and about the last few weekends taking hikes, visiting Sonoma, meeting up with friends in San Francisco. More to report soon!
